ETSI Workshop confirms leadership role for Machine-to-Machine standards – ETSI

ETSI’s recent M2M workshop in Sophia Antipolis highlighted the urgent need for standardized interfaces to support the massive growth of machine-to-machine communications and the future Internet of Things. Over 220 attendees, including major telecom operators and manufacturers, discussed how existing wireless and fixed networks can connect diverse sensors for applications ranging from rural farming to home automation. The ETSI M2M Technical Committee is nearing the finalization of its service platform architecture, with network operators urging a first release of standards by early 2011 to ensure interoperability across vertical sectors. Live demonstrations by InterDigital Inc. validated the effectiveness of current ETSI specifications for M2M gateways and low-power wireless area networks.
