ETSI has launched the E4P group to establish a pan-European standardization framework for interoperable smartphone-based contact tracing systems that automatically alert users to potential exposure while preserving privacy. This initiative aims to break transmission chains at scale by leveraging Bluetooth and ultra-low power technologies to map proximity data without compromising user anonymity or security. The framework aligns with European Commission recommendations on data protection and cybersecurity, ensuring solutions are robust, reliable, and capable of winning public trust. Over ten organizations from telco operators, vendors, and research centers have already joined to develop these standards, with further participation open to non-members through ETSI’s Industry Specification Groups.
