The Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking launched its first portfolio of 35 research and innovation projects in January 2023, backed by approximately 250 million EUR in Horizon Europe funding to advance European 5G and 6G capabilities. These initiatives follow an evolutionary path through enhanced 5G technologies and a revolutionary path investigating new enablers like AI, advanced optical communications, and integrated non-terrestrial networks. The portfolio includes large-scale trials in key vertical sectors such as automotive, energy, and healthcare, alongside the development of reusable EU-wide experimentation platforms to validate 6G technologies. Coordination actions are also underway to align European 6G roadmaps with global trends and foster a robust ecosystem for future connectivity.
