The ETSI Industry Specification Group for cross-cutting Context Information Management (ISG CIM) has released its first specification, GS CIM 004, which defines a standard Application Programming Interface (API) for managing data context such as meaning, source, and licensing. This specification addresses the interoperability challenges in smart cities by enabling close to real-time access to diverse information streams from open data, proprietary sources, IoT sensors, and mobile applications. By establishing a common “lingua franca” for data exchange, the standard ensures systems can reference shared definitions to improve decision-making reliability without replacing existing communication protocols. The release aims to close the loop in smart city architectures by complementing lower-level sensor connectivity standards like oneM2M with a robust upper-layer management solution.
