ETSI unveils Augmented Reality Framework enabling multi-vendor ecosystem for industry and consumers – ETSI

ETSI GS ARF 003 defines a generic augmented reality reference architecture that supports both fully embedded systems and scalable cloud-based implementations over IP networks. The standard describes functional building blocks that mix real-time spatially-registered digital content with the physical world, leveraging 5G’s improved bandwidth and latency for complex Industry 4.0 and medical use cases. A primary application highlighted is remote expert guidance, allowing experienced operators to train temporary staff in manufacturing plants while minimizing physical contact. This architecture enables subfunctions to be deployed either on the AR device or via cloud services to handle peak activity and staff shortages effectively.
