The ETSI has officially approved the O-RAN specification as a Publicly Available Specification (PAS), marking a significant step toward broader commercial adoption of Open RAN technology. This endorsement required a thorough review and revisions to ensure the specification aligns with ETSI’s rules and existing approval procedures for technical standards. Claire Chauvin of Orange highlighted that this recognition provides further validation desired by public and commercial entities globally, while the O-RAN Alliance plans to submit additional architecture specifications through the same PAS process. The ETSI PAS pathway allows partner organizations to have their specifications adopted as formal ETSI Technical Specifications or Technical Reports upon meeting legal and intellectual property requirements.
