ETSI awarded its 2019 Fellowship to Roberto Macchi, David Chater-Lea, and Friedhelm Hillebrand for their instrumental roles in developing global telecommunications standards. Macchi, a 20-year veteran of the fixed radio systems group, is recognized for establishing ETSI harmonized standards as the worldwide reference for microwave systems. Chater-Lea, a key figure in TETRA security since 1994, led efforts to ensure interoperability between legacy TETRA and emerging 3GPP broadband systems. Hillebrand, a former GSM project manager, is celebrated for proposing the inclusion of SMS and for chairing the committee that initiated the creation of 3GPP to standardize mobile communications. These awards recognize individuals who have made outstanding personal contributions to building ETSI’s reputation and advancing specific standardization sectors.
