The fifth generation of mobile systems aims to deliver ubiquitous very-high-speed connectivity at reduced cost, with true 5G networks not expected before 2020. Key technical requirements include increased speed, lower latency, improved device autonomy, and the ability to support a massive surge in connected sensors and machines. To accelerate development, the European Commission has committed €700 million through a Public Private Partnership to foster interoperable 5G networks between 2014 and 2020. This initiative builds upon the standardization work of the 3GPP group, which continues to evolve mobile technologies from GSM through LTE Advanced.
