Seven major global ICT Standards Development Organizations have launched oneM2M to develop unified specifications for machine-to-machine communications, aiming to support an estimated 50 billion connections by 2020. The new alliance focuses on creating a common M2M Service Layer that allows devices to communicate globally across diverse sectors such as healthcare, transportation, and energy management. By establishing access-independent end-to-end specifications, the organization seeks to reduce operating costs, accelerate time-to-market, and prevent standardization overlap for service providers and application developers. This initiative provides a shared platform to enable applications ranging from smart grids and connected cars to public safety systems.
