ETSI has released three new specifications for Low Throughput Network (LTN) technology, a wide-area bidirectional wireless solution designed to connect billions of IoT devices at a cost of less than one euro per modem. This technology enables long-range transmission of up to 40 kilometers with minimal power consumption, allowing standard batteries to operate for several years while providing robust interference protection. The new standards, GS LTN 001 through 003, define use cases, functional architecture, and protocols specifically for low-data applications like smart metering and environmental monitoring. LTN is positioned to complement existing cellular networks by offering a cost-effective, low-energy alternative for machine-to-machine communication where low latency is not critical.
