ETSI has developed a modular and scalable Software Radio Reconfiguration model to address the lifecycle mismatch between long-lasting vehicles and rapidly evolving mobile networks. This solution, detailed in EN 303 146 standards, enables secure over-the-air installation of new radio software components, allowing vehicles to upgrade from legacy 2G/3G/4G systems to future 5G networks without manual intervention. The framework specifically resolves critical challenges regarding device certification, type approval, and software portability while ensuring efficient radio performance. By supporting gradual evolution of onboard systems, this approach facilitates remote diagnostics, map updates, and security patching throughout a vehicle’s entire operational life.
