Wireless Media Distribution beyond 2020: ETSI, EBU and the way ahead – ETSI

Delegates at a workshop organized by ETSI and the EBU described 5G as a strategic opportunity to integrate broadcast and mobile networks to meet evolving user demands over the next two decades. Broadcasters identified critical requirements for future 5G systems, including free-to-air distribution without gatekeepers, broadcast-quality service, robust emergency capabilities, and support for targeted advertising analytics. The session highlighted that while current linear TV consumption remains high, the rise of large mobile screens necessitates new complementary services that existing networks cannot yet deliver efficiently. To address these gaps, industry stakeholders emphasized the need for collaborative development of cost-effective, spectrum-efficient delivery mechanisms that balance consumer needs with operator monetization models. This dialogue builds on decades of ETSI-EBU cooperation and aims to involve key partners like DVB, 3GPP, and the NGMN Alliance in shaping the next generation of broadcast standards.
