First study, new generation

The 3GPP TSGs#111 meetings in Fukuoka approved the first study report on 6G use cases and service requirements, TR 22.870, which outlines motivations for ubiquitous connectivity and supports market-driven CAPEX/OPEX reductions alongside new features like AI/ML and ISAC. Concurrently, the RAN group advanced its 6G radio study, TR 38.914, to 90% completion to guide migration from 5G and shape ITU-R IMT-2030 performance requirements. The Core Network group initiated four new protocol studies targeting completion in September 2027, while a cross-TSG session confirmed alignment for a Release 21 timeline announcement at the next plenary. These efforts collectively establish the foundational technical specifications and migration strategies for the upcoming 6G normative release.
