The ETSI Industry Specification Group on Open Radio equipment Interface (ISG ORI) will define an open interoperable interface for Radio Equipment in distributed GSM, UMTS, and LTE base stations to enable cost savings and greater network flexibility. This initiative directly implements requirements from the NGMN Alliance’s OBRI project and is supported by founding members including Alcatel-Lucent, AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Huawei, and Vodafone. The group aims to standardize the connection between Base Band Units and Remote Radio Heads or Integrated Active Antennas to facilitate widespread deployment of distributed architectures. The first meeting of the ISG is scheduled for late May in Turin, Italy, with further specification work to be closely monitored by the NGMN Alliance for early implementation in future mobile networks.
